Students

Stony Dean School is fully committed to make sure every child receives a specialised learning experience, which begins in Year 6 with our excellent transition programme. We work closely with the Primary schools to make sure information is shared, annual reviews and transition days are attended and additional visits are welcomed.

Upon joining the school, pupils receive a full and balanced curriculum with a strong emphasis on language development.  We also passionately believe that we are educating the whole child and we focus on preparation for the world of work and the subsequent skills involved. Therefore our main focus is reviewing our pupils against these targets and adjusting our daily planning to help our pupils be well rounded individuals.

Curriculum

We have designed the curriculum to meet the needs of our students and to provide opportunities for academic success. We have and will be following the National Curriculum and other suitable accreditation that meet the needs of students and prepare them for their future. These are appropriately modified to meet their special educational needs, having regard to age, ability, aptitude, and the nature of their learning difficulties Progress is reviewed by staff on a termly basis and allow staff to review and set targets with pupils.

Work Experience

Each year our students in year 11 and year 13 leave our school with both academic and personal success. Starting in Year 10, our pupils start a work experience program where they volunteer in groups on projects in the local community. In Year 11 this extends to ‘one day a week’ work placements at local companies for the majority of our pupils, which is then continued and expanded when they transition into Sixth Form with Stony Dean. This is currently on hold due to COVID 19 restrictions, Pupils are completing work experience within the school environment.

Accreditation

Students leave school with a mixture of Entry Levels, BTEC’s & other qualifications such as GCSE’s (if suitable). Their qualifications reflect the individual students learning journey and are maximised to ensure that they are stretched and challenged to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved. As a school we take a robust approach to ensuring that our students are fulfilling their potential by comparing the progress of our students against nationally recognised standards. Please see the examination results from 2022-23 further down the page.

Sixth Form and Life after SDS

Pupils may leave after Year 11 for further education at college, but most decide to stay for our structured sixth form where we offer the opportunity to take further qualifications including courses in skills required for everyday life. Having benefited from our unique support and having gained more personal confidence, pupils then proceed to college at the end of Year 12 or 13 to follow traditional courses. Please scroll down to see the destinations of the pupils who left the school at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.
