Day in the Life

Students

The students are very positive about their school.  They feel well supported and that their teachers and tutors genuinely care for their well-being and education.  Staff forge excellent working relationships with the students at the school and we often discover how important this has been to them when they reach an important transition point, such as the end of Year 11 or 13.  Here are a couple of comments from students regarding their day at school:

‘In the morning, I wait in my taxi for a couple of minutes and then can go and see my friends. Then I go to my form for GOAL time.  In GOAL time we can talk to our friends, draw, play games (like the silent game) or sit quietly.  This is until lesson one.

Some of my lessons are English, Maths, PE, Work Related Learning, DT, Food Tech and Art. Also, SALT, ICT, RE, Learning for Life, Humanities and Performing Arts.  My favourite lessons are Maths, Performing Arts, Work Related Learning, DT, Art and a little bit of English.

In Year 7, I go to different clubs for lunch time.  You can pick football, playing on the playground, art and music clubs. But, if it rains, we play dodgeball in the hall.

I like being in Year 7 at Stony Dean and want to be here until I go to college. I have made loads of new friends and I am very happy here’ – Ashley, Year 7

‘Being in Year 11 comes with a variety of exciting things.  Like all the different lessons to learn such as: P.E, English, Maths, Science and one of my favourite lessons; Performing Arts.  Also, all the work experience you can do and all the crucial qualifications you will need in later life if you are looking to go to college or employment.  Some of the qualifications you can earn in Year 11 are: Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2, GCSE, WJEC, BTEC’s and Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3.

As an extra “lesson” I participate in music therapy.  This allows me to write songs and understand that I can express my emotions through music.  I have written two songs already and are looking to write some more in the near future.  Music therapy also allows me to unwind and relax if I’m feeling anxious or worried about something.

Even though I have had some personal challenges to overcome, the school has supported me immensely and I’m very grateful for all their hard work and dedication they have given to support me over the last five years.’ – Charlie, Year 11
