Toots – Pets As Therapy

By June 22, 2017No Comments

We are extremely excited to announce that Stony Dean and Toots were mentioned in a recent article about Pets as Therapy. Please read the article below:
Toots the ‘Pets therapy dog’ visits Stony Dean Secondary Special School-
Toots is an 8 year old Mastiff and he weighs 80 kg! Toots is a gentle giant that has endless amounts of patience with everyone he meets. He has amazing intuition and is exceptionally people orientated and has such a gentle nature. He instinctively knows how to put individuals at ease which makes him the perfect ‘Therapy dog’ to work with Stony Dean students. Toots has been visiting Stony Dean School for the last 4 years and joins in many of the lessons including literacy on the Read2dogs programme, animal care, speech and language, travel training and art. Toots has a confident personality which makes him very adaptable and able to join many different situations. The students are always so enthusiastic to have Toots join in their lessons as he creates such a positive, calm environment enabling the students to become more confident and develop their self-esteem in the school environment. This empowers students to try new or challenging tasks and promotes their independence.
I also was very fortunate to visit a special needs secondary school to meet a very special Mastiff, Toots, who also helps children with their reading skills, their road crossing skills – and again to love them and be loved in return. The children were delighted to see Toots – and I was honoured that they had prepared a small project on working dogs knowing that was the reason for my visit.
